Easing into Winter
The first time I remember falling in love with darkness was during a meteor shower. It was my first year at Marwood, a Unitarian Universalist church camp in Northern Michigan, and the sky was perfectly clear. We brought our blankets up to the top of a grassy hill and lay them out under the blanket of stars. We were up later than our scheduled bedtimes because the counselors didn’t want us to miss the experience.
At first, we just watched the still sky and chatted and giggled as 12-year-olds tend to do. But then the meteors started streaking across the sky and the whole hill became silent as we lay transfixed by the sight.Â
It was a holy moment, a holy hour even.
Since that time, so many of my most spiritual moments have happened in the dark; singing around a campfire, watching the aurora borealis from a butte in North Dakota, walking down a moonlit road outside of Portland, and in the night feedings of early motherhood.
As we move into the time of year when more and more darkness surrounds us, let’s lean into the peace of this time of year. Let’s embrace the warmth of community and the spaces made holy by our attention. And let’s find ways to be there for each other without having to dig our cars out of the snow!
Hermit & Moon
As the darkest part of the year approaches, I’ve found that there is a fine line between enjoying the natural slowing down process of winter and feeling deeply isolated. I am offering this circle in the hopes of striking a balance between going inward and staying connected to community.Â
