In an interview recently someone told me all people are either Scientists or Artists. I questioned that, asking if they thought there was space for someone who was a blend or somewhere in between. I concluded that this too was a space of transformation. Science requires a spark of creativity to progress, and art needs an element of a scientific approach to adapt, so where are those who naturally want and need to transform things? I've since concluded that these people are in fact Alchemists.

This resonates! I was forced to choose, being told that art won’t pay the bills I chose science, with art always as a hobby. Now, exploring who I am as an adult, I’m starting to realize I can indeed combine them, there’s an overlap. Life is better if you stay over to everything this world has to offer.

I absolutely agree! We do make choices and concessions throughout our lives, but we have to learn to dabble across the board and try a little bit of everything, it's this unique combination ion experiences and knowledge that makes us who we are, and makes the impact we leave on the world distinct. Of course, you can combine them! Everything overlaps somewhere eventually.

I’ve just come across this and you are describing my life - I can’t choose, can’t narrow down, am curious about so much! I’m also exploring neurodivergence and wondering if ADHD traits might be at play. But mostly - at 48 - I want to get rid of a sense of shame around not being able to choose and lean into joy about being so interested in the world. Happy to have found your writing!

Yes, there is a lot of shame that pops up around not being able to choose one thing. I’m so so glad you’re here!

Yes indeed. My daughter is currently being assessed for autism and I am also looking at my own neurodivergence. I’m not at all surprised at what I am finding just more at peace with myself perhaps.

yes! It's such a poignant entry point to learn about ourselves through our children, don't you think?

Yes and also to see the echoes through our ancestry too - my dad is obviously spectrumy and from the sounds of it so was his dad… it stretches in both directions and here we are in the middle, able to look to the younger and older. Hopefully able to be more aware of ourselves.
